El alcalde de Mérida destina 100,000 euros para ayuda en Gaza y pide la retirada de la ley de Concord.

  • Antonio Rodríguez Osuna made a common public statement, among the municipal groups of PSOE and joins Mérida, to repeal the Concord Law «which is a democratic anomaly that once again shows that the President of the Board of Directors says one thing and does the opposite.»

Mayor Antonio Rodríguez Osuna, accompanied by the spokesperson of the municipal group «United for Mérida,» Oscar Fernández, appeared today to make a joint statement requesting the Concord Law «that the PP of Extremadura and Vox want to interpret as an attack against memory, truth, and history.»

Rodríguez Osuna expressed this straightforwardly with Oscar Fernández. «We join both municipal groups, PSOE and United with Mérida, to denounce that this law they intend to approve is a democratic anomaly, once again showing that the President of the Board of Directors says one thing and does the opposite, as just a few months ago María Guardiola was against it,»

Rodríguez Osuna emphasized that it is anything but a concord, as it is an «unbearable historical revision that contradicts current state legislation and goes against international agreements,» he said. Furthermore, the United Nations «have already warned the PP and Vox in other autonomous communities,» says the Mayor of Mérida, because this new law «does not help maintain the historical memory of serious human rights violations.»

The Mayor of Mérida has ensured that any political party «that delves into democratic principles cannot in any case support a law that attempts to bury the victims of fascism and that what it truly carries is discord, silence, and forgetting,» says Rodríguez Osuna.

On the other hand, Oscar Fernández, the spokesperson for «United for Mérida,» emphasized the agreement with the municipal government to make this joint declaration rejecting the law. «We show our rejection of the Concord Law that is being processed in the Extremadura Assembly, where our group has presented it to all the PP and Vox, which is a real slap in the face to democratic memory.» In the municipal plenary «We have brought on other occasions for the defense of the Palestinian people,» and this aid is «necessary and urgent.»

Aid for Gaza

Mayor Rodríguez Osuna announced today that the Municipal Council will allocate 100,000 euros in humanitarian aid for Gaza aimed at health services for the population of the Gaza Strip.

This will be done through UNRWA, which currently operates only 6 out of the 22 health centers and three additional facilities rented by the agency, used as temporary health centers. They have 100 mobile medical teams working at 37 points. This will be possible due to a budget that will be allocated from the 2024 Treasury surplus, which will be approved tomorrow and with which the municipal group «United for Mérida» agrees.

This project aims to ensure access to essential health services for the population in the Gaza Strip, in the context of the serious humanitarian crisis triggered by the escalation of the conflict that began on October 7, 2023, and worsened in 2025 by the Israeli forces’ crackdown on March 18. «In this context, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza requires an urgent and coordinated response that ensures access to comprehensive medical care, psychosocial support, adequate nutrition, and specific protection for women and children, who are the most vulnerable groups.

Thanks to the support from the city of Mérida (€100,000), the employment of key personnel for 6.5 months, including 3 medical officers, 3 midwives, and 3 nurses.
