El alcalde honra a María Cabanes Velázquez con el escudo dorado de la ciudad a sus 100 años

  • María Cabanes emphasized that it is very good, «except for an issue with my eyesight and the pains that make it difficult for me to get up, because my body weighs a lot.»

The mayor, Antonio Rodríguez Osuna, accompanied by the chief delegate, Catalina Alarcón, visited María Cabanes Velázquez this morning at her home, who turned 100 on March 15.

As usual, the mayor presented María Cabanes with the city’s gold shield «on behalf of Mérida, celebrating 100 years,» he explained. The mayor also emphasized that there are currently 31 centenarians in Mérida.

María Cabanes emphasized that it is very good, «except for an issue with my eyesight and the pains that make it difficult for me to get up, because my body weighs a lot.» She also highlighted aspects of her life such as «the good and bad things she experienced like war and all these things. She was a seamstress and lived quite well.»

In receiving the city’s gold shield, she proudly said, «I am grateful because I am one of Mérida.» Catalina Alarcón emphasized that the gold shield is «a recognition always given by the Municipal Council to all the individuals who reach 100 years in our city, which are increasing every day.»

She stressed that «the longevity of life is demonstrated daily, and today we are at María’s house to make this recognition and present the shield of our city, and of course, congratulate her in person, because María is also great, she is wonderful!»
